Open Scholarship Policy

Curtin University’s Open Scholarship Policy supports researchers in making their research and educational outputs openly available, so they can be read, shared, and reused by the public. Making research open helps knowledge travel beyond the University and increases the reach and impact of Curtin research.

Who does the policy apply to?

  • Curtin University staff
  • Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students

What research outputs are covered?

The policy applies to a wide range of scholarly outputs, including:

  • Journal articles
  • Theses
  • Research data
  • Other research materials

Wherever possible, these outputs are made available through Curtin’s institutional repository , ensuring they are preserved and easy to find.

What does “open” mean?

In the context of this policy, open means research outputs can be:

  • Read by anyone
  • Shared widely
  • Reused, where appropriate

Open scholarship helps research reach broader audiences and supports greater engagement with Curtin’s work.

Why open scholarship matters?

Open scholarship benefits:

  • Researchers, by increasing visibility and impact
  • Students, by improving access to research
  • The wider community, by sharing knowledge beyond the University

It also helps researchers meet funder and publisher requirements and supports collaboration.

Are there any exceptions?

Some research outputs may need restrictions due to:

  • Publisher embargoes
  • Cultural considerations
  • Ethical requirements

These exceptions are recognised within the policy and managed responsibly.

Open Educational Resources

The policy also encourages the creation and use of Open Educational Resources (OER), such as openly licensed teaching materials.

This supports equitable access to education and responsible knowledge sharing.

Our commitment

  • Share knowledge responsibly
  • Promote equity of access
  • Contribute to solving local and global challenges
