GenAI for researchers

Overview

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is a type of technology that creates new content like text, images, audio, video or code based on patterns in data, probability and human feedback. For more information about GenAI and how it works see Understanding GenAI. For more information about the history, training and ethics of AI, complete the 23 Things Module: AI.

GenAI has the ability to support and streamline every stage of the research process. However, it also presents risks to research ethics, integrity and data quality. Researchers at Curtin are encouraged to embrace GenAI technology, but to do so critically and in ways that maintain Academic Integrity and Research Standards.

Use of GenAI must comply with all relevant legislation, institutional policies, research guidelines and ethical frameworks. Ensure use of GenAI aligns with Curtin’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy and the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, 2018.

Use of copyright materials with GenAI is governed by copyright law. You must refer to Australian copyright law when determining if material can be used with GenAI in Australia, and if there are terms and conditions for use. Australian copyright law applies differently to GenAI at the input (prompt) and output stages.

Curtin Guidelines for the use of AI in research

Curtin’s Guidelines for the use of AI in research: For researchers and research students is maintained and updated by the Graduate Research School.

The guidelines cover:

  • Curtin’s S.E.C.U.R.E. GenAI use framework
  • Intellectual Property & Privacy
  • Indigenous Cultural & Intellectual Property
  • Enterprise-licenced GenAI tools
  • Thesis and publication writing
  • Disclosure

It is advised that HDR students discuss all GenAI use with their supervisory team and document any outcomes. Both students and their supervisors should be aware of the potential risks of using GenAI, as well as the skill development that is potentially forgone through not doing specific tasks.
